Equation #9

7 comments:

  1. The boy who cried wolf is given a second chance in taking care of the sheep after his failure. One day, the mayor entrusts his sheep to the boy. Coincidentally, the number of sheep the mayor gave to the boy is the same number of sheep he started off with. The next day a coyote comes and steals one sheep. The next day, a pack of wolves come and steals a third of all the sheep. The pack of wolves stole a total of 5 sheep. How many sheep did he originally have?

I don't understand this word problem. If the total that the pack of wolves stole was 5 sheep and if you double the amount of sheep the boy had and subtracted one from it, the answer should equal the amount of sheep left, not the amount of sheep that the wolves stole.

  4. The question's story is entertaining, but there are too many characters, it isn't easy to follow along. Please simplify the question furthermore.

We kind of understand this problem, but we don't get the part where you said the total sheep stolen from the wolves was 5 sheep. The equation also includes the sheep stolen by the coyote and the wolf pack, so we don't get why you said "the pack of wolves stole a total of 5 sheep."
